Where the research learned to talk

A doctoral research programme is shaped, more than anything, by the conversations it has with the field at conferences. Between 2021 and 2024 I presented at ten academic conferences across Europe and online, including the 15th and 16th World Congresses of the International Association for Semiotic Studies (Thessaloniki, Warsaw), the 13th Conference of the Nordic Association for Semiotic Studies (Helsinki), the Semiotic Society of America, the International Semiotics Institute (Olomouc), and the Tartu Semiotics Summer School. Each presentation was an occasion to sharpen one part of the research against the specific reception of its audience, and each fed back into the thesis as it took shape.

What was made

A four-year arc of talks

The presentations cluster around a core thread and several specific developments.

Core thread, techno-living spaces and immersive environments: how the meaning-making world of an inhabitant changes when their living space is mediated by smart-home systems, virtual reality, or other digitally saturated infrastructures.

  • A semiotic model for smart home affordances (online, 2021)
  • The paradox of virtual and realistic nature (Thessaloniki, 2022)
  • The degrees of nature for immersive virtual environments (Semiotic Society of America, 2022)
  • Umwelt in an umwelt (Tartu and Bucharest, 2023)
  • Trajective design and mesosemiotics: Transforming rubbish into realty (Warsaw, 2024), connecting to the published work on Earthships

Three further threads run alongside:

  • Interoperability as a key affordance to live with nature (Olomouc, 2024), extending the techno-living work into ecological territory.
  • Why the world needs semiotic consulting (Tartu Semiotics Summer School, 2023), bringing the applied face of the research to a teaching context.
  • Observing inner speech in the meaning-making through artistic texts, co-presented with Aleksander Fadeev (Helsinki, 2023), which grew into a published article in the NASS proceedings.
  • Break the Algorithm: How a card game can de-sign meaning in a living space (Helsinki, 2023), bringing the in-house card game into the academic discourse on de-sign.
What it shows

Tested against the most demanding readers

The conferences are where the research learned to talk. They are also where the thesis’s central claim was tested against the most demanding readers it could find, semioticians, design theorists, biosemioticians, and educators, and continued to hold its shape. Several of the presentations were published as articles; several others remained as conference papers and are the seed material for future writing.
